How to Root Sprint Galaxy Note 2 L900VPALJC 4.1.1 Jelly Bean OTA Update

Here's how to root the Sprint Galaxy Note 2 that has been updated to its first official OTA update L900VPALJC an Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean that brings Multi Window View Function. Sprint Galaxy Note 2 was originally shipped with the factory default firmware L900VPALJ1 which we have already been using the same rooting method without the binary flash counter increase. Thanks to the man who brought us up this rooting technique mrRobinson a highly recognized Android developer from XDA-Developers, that is also well-known of his previous works on Samsung Galaxy S3 devices.

Although, there are some other rooting method out there that I will also introduce to you later on like chainfire's CF-Auto Root which is also been easy to deal with, but I would firstly recommend this one, since this is much more convenient for beginners and it doesn't need more extra tweaks.

Why this rooting method makes any differences on my Galaxy Note 2?

This rooting method uses the original stock firmware L900VPALJC Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean that is the same firmware released from OTA update. This was simply  injected with root images like the SU Binary and SuperSU app, so once you install it onto your device it won't trip the binary flash counter and your device will run with rooted original firmware, this technique will also get rid of your Galaxy Note 2 from messing up any future OTA updates. Haven't you heard some users having difficulty updating their devices thru OTA and Samsung Kies? Well, think about that, this gonna be the best rooting ever before for noobs like me and you.

Guide for Beginners: How to install Root injected stock L900VPALJC

Disclaimer: We should not be held responsible if anything happens to your device by following this guide. Proceed and use of this guide is solely at your own risk!

Important Reminders before Flashing on Samsung Galaxy Note 2

  • Make sure that your Galaxy Note 2 battery is fully charge.
  • Stock ROM packages comes in two formats the ‘Full-Wipe’ (delete your stored data after flashing) and the ‘Non-Wipe’ (it doesn’t delete your phone’s stored data) but it is highly recommended to make a back up all important files stored from your phone’s internal memory – contacts, messages, etc. before flashing no-matter if it is Full-WIpe or Non-Wipe, just to be safe and ensure that your stored data are in safe if something went wrong during the flashing process.
  • Use a PC or laptop that runs in Windows OS, with a good and perfectly working USB serial port. Odin will not work on MAC OS.
  • Use the supplied USB cable for your Galaxy Note 2.
  • Enable USB debugging from your phone’s settings. Go to Settings > Applications > Development, and tick the box that says ‘Enable USB Debugging’.
  • Ensure that KIES is closed and not running in the system tray! Kies will interrupt and doesn’t like Odin, it will block you from flashing even both are creation of Samsung.

Step 1: Grab the root injected image

Step 2: Grab Odin USB Driver and Extract the downloaded root injected stock ROM
Install the USB Driver first to get rid of flashing failures. Also need to extract the downloaded file which is packed in zip format, so that you’ll get the tar.md5 file.

Step 3: Run and Configure Odin
Unzip and run Odin on your PC desktop. Watch out the check-boxes options on the right top of Odin, ensure that the ‘RE-PARTITION’ is unchecked, only the ‘AUTO-REBOOT and ‘F.RESET TIME’ checkboxes are both remained checked.

Step 4:  Boot your Galaxy Note 2 into Download Mode
Turn the power off. After it completely shut down, just press and hold the Volume Down key, Home button and the Power ON/OFF button simultaneously.
You should then prompted into a warning screen and asking you to press volume up if you want to continue or volume down to cancel, just simply press volume up to get into download mode. The download mode then displays an Android robot and say’s “Downloading.. Do not turn off target!!”

Step 5. Connect your Galaxy Note 2 to Computer or Laptop
Once you already reboot the phone in download mode, simply connect the phone to your PC or laptop USB.
In Odin window – the ID:COM box will turn to blue color and indicates the COM port number and a word “Added” on a log box will prompt you that the device is already detected or recognized by Odin. Your COM port number might be different from mine. If you do not see a COM port number then there’s something missing or wrong. You may read again from the top of this post.

Step 6: Set and load and the root66_SPR_L900VPALJC.tar.md5 file.imply click on the PDA button, then browse to the folder where the root66_SPR_L900VPALJC.tar.md5 you have previously extracted and then select or load it.

Step 7:  Begin Flashing the root injected stock ROM
Hit the “START” button in Odin to begin flashing.
Do not ever interrupt the phone while already in flashing progress, like disconnecting the cable or turning off the device. Just wait until it completely finish.

Step 8: Wait and watch out for the word "PASS!!"
When the flashing successfully completes, you will then see a word “PASS” in Odin. This indicates that the flashing was already finish, and on the log box at the bottom says “All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)”. The phone will just then automatically reboot, then it’s time to remove it from PC or laptop USB connection.

Now my device is rooted, how can I unroot it if I need to?
If you want to remove root in the future, you can simply restore or install back the original stock ROM into your device. The process is still the same as mentioned above but you need to grab the original, unmodified or unrooted stock firmware. Follow this detailed guide here and  grab the original firmware fro your device.
If you have any doubts and wants to get any further details, just head over to XDA-developers original thread and get a one on one discussion from mrRobinson himself.
