The Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition’s zoom ring feels slightly wobbly because it’s intentionally designed that way. Xiaomi built in controlled movement to improve durability, prevent jamming from dust or liquids, and ensure smooth long-term rotation. The clicking sound is normal, functionality is unaffected, and the phone still fully meets its IP66, IP68, and IP69 water and dust resistance ratings.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is expected to make its global debut in early 2026, likely in the first quarter. The standard Xiaomi 17 model may also launch alongside it, offering a more conventional flagship option.


In a Weibo Q&A, Xiaomi explained that the zoom ring uses a complex sandwich-style structure made up of 26 individual components. To prevent frame deformation during drops and to avoid rotation jams caused by dust or liquid intrusion, Xiaomi deliberately built in both radial and axial movement tolerances.

Xiaomi emphasized that the Master Zoom Ring has undergone extensive testing during both trial and mass production. These tests included exposure to dust and water, high temperatures, humidity, repeated drop tests, and long-term rotation stress tests.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition’s zoom ring feels slightly wobbly because it is intentionally designed that way, not due to a manufacturing flaw. While this may seem unusual on a premium flagship, Xiaomi has confirmed that the behavior is part of the engineering behind the Master Zoom Ring.

The Master Zoom Ring is a complex mechanical component made up of 26 individual parts, including 20 high-strength ball bearings and an internal optical displacement sensor. To ensure smooth and reliable rotation, Xiaomi built in controlled radial and axial movement. This small amount of play helps the mechanism operate consistently over time.

One key reason for the intentional looseness is durability. By allowing slight movement, the zoom ring can better absorb shocks during accidental drops, reducing the risk of frame deformation. The design also prevents the ring from jamming if dust, sand, or liquid enters the mechanism, which is especially important for long-term use.

Some users have also noticed a faint clicking sound when tapping or rotating the ring. According to Xiaomi, this sound is normal and results from the internal mechanical structure and tolerances. It does not indicate loose or broken components.

Extensive Testing to Achieve High-Durability

Importantly, the slight movement does not affect the phone’s durability ratings. Xiaomi states that the Leica Edition still fully meets IP66, IP68, and IP69 standards for dust and water resistance, offering reassurance for everyday and outdoor use.

During development and mass production, the Master Zoom Ring went through extensive testing, including exposure to dust and water, high temperatures, humidity, drop tests, and prolonged rotation cycles. Despite its “wobbly” feel, the ring remains fully functional and customizable, allowing users to quickly launch the camera, switch modes, or control camera features smoothly.
