A Working Root for T-Mo Galaxy S2 T989 UVMC6 Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Update

Here's how to root Samsung Galaxy S2 T-Mobile (SGH-T989) already receives an upgrade to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean build T989UVMC6. The root method on this Android 4.1.2 looks likely similar to rooting the previous 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich version. All you need to grab is the latest TWRP  (team win recovery project) open recovery version '2.4.4.0'. From there you can easily root your T-mo Galaxy S2 or install the Superuser via TWRP. Just follow the guide below if you are completely noob, for advance users just grab the file from the source below.

Disclaimer: Rooting voids the warranty of your device. If you don't have any idea of the heck is this all about, then leave your device untouched. Proceed at your own risk!

Step 1: Grab the needed files

TWRP recovery: openrecovery-twrp-2.4.4.0-hercules
USB Driver  (only needed if you don not have Kies installed in your computer)
Odin 1.85 - unzip Odin after donwload

Step 2: Install TWRP recovery via Odin

  • Make sure the battery is fully charge
  • Run Odin downloader tool.
  • Reboot the phone into download mode - Turn it OFF. Then hold down both volume buttons and plug connect USB cable into your phone. (or hold volume down and power button). Press the volume up button when you see this menu.
  • Just be sure that Re-Partition is NOT checked. leave Auto reboot and F-Reset time checked by default.
  • Click the PDA button in Odin. Browse to the TWRP file "openrecovery-twrp-2.4.4.0-hercules.tar" you downloaded and select it.
  • Now hit Start button and Odin will flash the recovery.
  • Once Odin has finished flashing you will see a green PASS.

Step 3: Install SuperSU and Gain Root

  • Reboot into recovery. Power off your phone. Hold both volume buttons and the power button at the same time. When the phone vibrates, let go of the power button but keep holding both volume buttons. In a few seconds you should be in the recovery menu.
  • TWRP will tell you that the phone is not rooted and ask you if you want to install superSU. Say yes.
  • Phone will reboot, and in your programs there will be a superSU installer. Open it.
  • Just follow the TWRP  prompts.
  • Now your fully rooted.

    TWRP didn't give me any prompt to root or install super user so no it didn't work T.T

      it did not ask for me niether. but i went to reboot and selected recovery and then it asked me

    Once again,(2nd time using this,)worked just as the directions said it would.

    Flashing TWRP went without a hitch using Odin. When going into recovery to get SU to install i only had to choose reboot system and was then given the option to install superSU.

    My phone then rebooted and i went into the apps drawer as the directions said, and clicked on SuperSU. SuperSU then informed me the phone would reboot into recovery and install the app.

    When i clicked OK my phone rebooted into recovery and installed SU.

    When the phone rebooted i was rooted with a TWRP recovery just as the directions said.
